An Ontario driver is warning others about faulty gas pumps after they were recently charged without any gas being dispensed at a Petro Canada.

In a Reddit post, the user shared a video at the gas station pump titled “Beware out there.” In the video, the pump meter appears to be increasing, however, the user isn’t holding down the handle trigger and no gas is flowing out. The user said this occurred three times.

The Petro Canada was located at the intersection of Major Mackenzie Drive and McCowan Road in Markham, the user said.

After noticing the issue, the driver says they went inside to notify staff, to which they described the cashier as “defensive” and almost immediately “angry.”

“When I went inside the guy at the counter didn’t believe me and said I must have pumped the gas,” the Reddit user explained.

“Once I told him I had video proof, his whole demeanour changed. He came outside and replicated what I did (which was pre pay at pump, lift nozzle and select grade) and Lo and Behold, the pump started to run WITH NO GAS being dispensed.”

The cashier said he would issue a refund and instructed the driver to move to another pump, they wrote.

“I wonder how many they have ripped off,” the user questioned.

Petro Canada confirmed that there was an issue with a pump at the station site and said it was subsequently shut down. The petrol company also said the guest was reimbursed and was able to fill up at another pump “successfully.”

“A technician was called to inspect and repair the pump that had malfunctioned, which is now operating normally,” Petro Canada told Now Toronto in an email on Tuesday.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

While the Reddit user was luckily able to receive their refund due to catching the incident on video, other users in the thread are questioning how many times a malfunction such as this has flown under the radar.

“Now I’m wondering how many of these gas stations are rigged in a way customers will never find out,” one user commented.

“I was at a Petro today, had about 10 per cent of my 40L tank left. I filled up and noticed it filled 42L and thought that was sketchy,” another user on the platform wrote.

“Seeing this from another Petro as well is fishy.”
