Video of Brampton Canadian Tire gas station shows meter charging customer despite no gas being pumped

A Brampton resident is left with a bunch of unanswered questions after his meter at a Canadian Tire gas station charged him despite not dispensing any gas.

On Nov. 28, Kanwar Sierah said he visited a Canadian Tire gas station shortly after 7:30 a.m., in the area of Bovaird Dr. and McLaughlin Rd.

“I prepaid $120 inside for fuel and washer fluid, with the gas totaling $112. However, upon returning to the pump, I noticed the meter already ticking in cents and volume, even before dispensing any gas,” Sierah told Now Toronto on Tuesday.

Sierah said he then pulled out his phone and started filming the numbers increasing as he carefully held the nozzle without pressing the lever.

“Feeling deceived, I returned inside for a full refund. The attendant took my video to forward to the manager and made me wait 15-20 minutes before refunding. He initially said he was awaiting the manager’s response, but I insisted on an immediate refund. I received a refund receipt,” Sierah said.

Sierah said he immediately alerted Canadian Tire about the incident but did not receive a response from the automotive retail company until Monday.

“Canadian Tire then messaged me, and I sent them the receipt. Their last message said, ‘Thank you for providing this information. We will share this with the appropriate team.’ Yet, no one has contacted me since yesterday,” Sierah added.

Now Toronto reached out to Canadian Tire who said the gas pump was repaired.

“The issue with the fuel pump at the McLaughlin and Bovaird Gas+ location in Brampton was identified and resolved on November 28. Upon learning of the incident, the pump was closed, repaired and reopened,” a spokesperson said in an email statement.

Canadian Tire did not provide details about how long the gas pump was dysfunctional for or what the cause of the issue was.
