Although 2023 came with its ups and downs, we can all agree that Torotonians stayed the course and just like that, we’re onto the next one.
Some of my favourite moments this year have no doubt included sharing a meal with friends, family and co-workers.
Here are eight restaurants in the city that stood out to Now Toronto this year.
PATRIA
If you’re looking for some serious Spanish cuisine, Patria is the way to go.
Its ingredients are imported straight from the motherland so you can expect fresh fish, octopus, shrimp and so much more.
In fact, the star of the show was the Paella Patria, which is one of Patria’s classics featuring mussels, shrimp, clams, cod, chorizo, peas, sofrito, saffron, parsley, sumac and aioli.
Additionally, the Croquetas De Setas that includes porcini mushrooms, manchego cheese, and truffle aioli were amazing.
Another fan favourite is the tuna tartare!
Location: 478 King Street West

BARO
One thing about Latin food is you can never go wrong.
And Baro is no exception. The Latin-inspired restaurant has pretty much been the talk of the town since it opened, in part due to its incredible dishes and nightlife which is literally just a staircase away.
From fresh salads and seafood to delicious grilled corn, there’s something for everyone.

PIANO PIANO is an Italian restaurant that is pretty much always around the corner.
Its menu features traditional Italian fan favourites but with a classy twist. From a wide selection of pastas, pizzas, salads and meats you will not be disappointed.
Location: Various locations around the GTA, which can be found here.

Miss Aïda
When it comes to food, the Middle East doesn’t play around.
And one new spot making noise in the city is Lebanese restaurant Miss Aïda.
This place serves up Levantine cuisine that encompasses parts of Turkey, the north of Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, small parts of Egypt and the coast of the eastern Mediterranean.

This newest addition to Yorkville is full of culinary traditions.
Some of the stand-out menu items include its trio dip, zucchini chips and my favourite, the lamb chops.

DASHA
If you are up for a night of delicious modern Chinese food and some late-night karaoke, Dasha is your girl.
The restaurant’s exciting menu includes incredible truffle fried rice, to-die-for tenderloin and the best general tao chicken I’ve tried.
Location: 620 King St. W.

Wazema
It’s not a world food tour without making a stop in Africa.
And one Ethiopian restaurant in Toronto knows how to represent. Wazema is a family restaurant that takes mom’s cooking and turns up the heat.
In fact, the restaurant’s Zil Zil Tibs will have you daydreaming.
And if you’re vegan or vegetarian, they offer a variety of alternatives so you won’t be left out.
Location: 1360 Danforth Ave.

Calling all foodies and music lovers!
Kissa is a vinyl listening lounge on King West that serves up some traditional yet chic Japanese food.
The star of the menu is definitely the bite-size Wagyu Katsu Sando. Other favourites include the beautifully grilled sea bream and edamame hummus.
