BLK ODYSSY brought infectious, electrifying energy to his Toronto concert on Sept. 13 with fans singing along to each of his songs from his latest album, 1-800 FANTASY.

His Toronto stop on The Fantasy House Tour this past weekend clearly demonstrated his dedication to his followers who clearly appreciate the artist’s impressive versatility across genres.

Having discovered BLK ODYSSY just weeks before the concert, I went in with mixed feelings but high expectations, especially after watching his NPR Tiny Desk Concert, as someone who enjoys and appreciates a wide range of genres.

For those unfamiliar, Juwan Elcock, who goes by his stage name BLK ODYSSY, draws inspiration from performers like Kendrick Lamar, D’Angelo, OutKast, and Funkadelic.

On Friday night, BLK ODYSSY was joined by his longtime guitarist Alejandro Rios, bassist Jimmy Blazer, another guitarist, and a drummer.

Though the main act didn’t start until 10 p.m., the audience was warmed up by two opening acts: rapper Benji. and hip-hop, R&B artist Asha Imuno. Despite some delays in setup in between sets, both artists engaged with the crowd, and pumped them up for BLK ODYSSY.

Benji., in particular, won over new fans with his interactive performance and diverse set, which included songs like “Better” and “Jorja.”

When BLK ODYSSY finally took the stage, he’d built anticipation with dim lighting before he emerged and launched into the first song for the night “XXX.”

With five band members on stage, including three guitarists, the space felt a bit cramped, and the band appeared somewhat squeezed together.

Despite the tight quarters, each member brought their own unique style to the performance. BLK ODYSSY stood out with his flashy, white-silver jewellery and made a bold statement by wearing a black-and-white keffiyeh, a headscarf symbolizing the Palestinian liberation movement and often used to convey political sentiments.

Most of the band members wore leather pants, adding to the rock or metal vibe of the performance.

Some of the other songs that the band performed were tracks from his latest album, 1-800 FANTASY, including “BLEACH,” “WANT YOU,” “LAST RESORT,” “STANK ROSE,” and  “DELILAH.”

My favourite songs were “CHANGES and GEMINI,” both from the same album. When he performed these songs, the vibes in the room were electric as the audience sang along to every word of the song, often singing louder than BLK ODYSSY himself.

Though the crowd was small and the show wasn’t sold out, this allowed for a more relaxed experience with space to move around and enjoy the concert from different angles.

The intimate setting allowed for a deeper connection between the artist and his devoted fans, who knew lyrics to every song that he sang and were thoroughly engaged throughout the performance.

A special shout-out also goes to the venue team at The Great Hall for providing free water to attendees on the hot and humid day.

In the end, if you’re interested in exploring a blend of genres like R&B, hip-hop and rock, BLK ODYSSY might be an artist worth checking out.

Complete with Steve Aoki’s iconic cake-facing and confetti-popping performances, VELD was one of Toronto’s biggest outdoor parties to remember this summer.

At the beginning of each day of the three-day festival, lines of thousands of people swarmed Downsview Park, as they carried water bags and group signs in hand.

As soon as you entered the park, the festival resembled a video game simulation with a carnival-sized ferris wheel near one one of the hills, people wearing brightly-coloured garnets and sparkly makeup, and groups of friends dancing nonstop together.

Each day had its own theme, including retro Saturday and neon Sunday. People followed the clothing assignment coming in with colourful fits, bright makeup, and bedazzled faces.

Clothing company Shein also posted a pop-up near the food stalls with a photobooth and free merchandise, including foldable fans for the intense heat.

The main stage drew in a slew of people eager to watch headliners like Marshmello, Alok, Frank Walker, and Kaskade.

In between the artists, professional shuffle dance groups also performed routines to hype up the crowd.

Marshmello played top hits from his It’s Riddim Time EP he released this year, including “Loaded,” and “T3R4RS.” The crowd also went crazy for pop hits that Marshmello spinned on, like Tyla’s “Water,” Khalid’s “Silence,” and Anne-Marie’s “Friends.”

Festival-goers even dressed up in Marshmello heads and worldwide house music brand Monstercat made an appearance in costume as well.

Growing artist Max Styler also wowed the crowd with his singles from this year, including “Tarantula,” “Follow Me,” and “Lights Out.”

Attendees were particularly excited when DJ Steve Aoki came on stage for his set on Saturday, waving “Cake me” signs around in the air, referring to his signature move of throwing cake at a fan’s face during his concerts. Near the end of his set, a shirtless Aoki, with a flowing mane, ran out into the crowd with a sheet cake in hand and returned back to the stage to throw five more.

On Sunday, Kream, Alesso, and Alok hit the stage and threw some of the most heart-pumping music.

People were singing along in sync to Alesso’s hit songs, including “Heroes,” “If I lose myself,” and “Let me Go.”

Sunday night’s finale was the most memorable with a UFO light show for the last headliner, Martin Garrix.

People screamed out his name as they put their fists in the air and jumped up and down to his beats.

As it got darker, more lights, fire, and smoke filled the park to end this year’s electronic music festival.

Fana Hues might have been the opening act for Lucky Daye’s The Algorithm Tour, but for many, she stole the show.

R&B singer and songwriter Fana Subira Hughes, known professionally as Fana Hues, graced the stage at HISTORY on July 31 with poise and confidence that perfectly complemented her modern yet classy look.

Sporting long brown hair and a striking black-and-white jersey dress with a prominent “T” at the centre, she kept her ensemble simple with white sneakers and gold jewellery, creating a look that was both understated and elegant.

She kicked off the night with the song “Sweet Like” from her third and latest album Moth, that set the vibe for the rest of the evening.

Like her look, she dominated the stage with a minimal vibe as she sang her popular songs with only her guitarist, Stephanie Chow, who deserves a special shoutout for absolutely killing it.

While Lucky Daye’s performance was paired with visuals in the background, Hues delivered a dreamy and powerful performance with just the music, and the stage lights.

At first, the audience seemed unsure of what to expect from Hues, but by the end of her opening song, everyone was engaged, swaying to her voice and dance moves.

Her set continued with “BAD Bad” from her second album flora + fana, but it was her third song, “Paper Tigers,” that truly ignited the crowd.

Having only discovered the artist a week before attending her concert, Hues struck me as a fusion of SZA, H.E.R., and Daniel Caesar all in one artist.

At the concert, Hues expertly balanced her setlist with alternating upbeat and soulful tracks, moving from “Fall in Line” to “Lay Up.”

It was heartwarming and cute to see so many couples in the crowd embrace each other and sway along with her soulful songs.

Finally, Hues saved the best for last with her song “Rental,” where she showed off her dance moves to the peppy song and actively engaged with the audience, encouraging them to cheer for Lucky Daye at the end.

She was the perfect hype girl for the main act, and the audience was there for it!

It is safe to say that I went to the concert for Lucky Daye but left as a Fana Hues stan, and she is currently my go-to artist for a chill night in with a glass of wine.

Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh sold out and lit the entire Rogers Centre with his contagious spiritual energy at his Dil-luminati concert over the weekend.

Two hours before the concert, the downtown core was packed with groups of friends in black dresses like many of the lead models featured in Dosanjh’s music videos. Others were wearing shirts with the singer’s face on it.

The beginning of the show began with a paath, a daily Sikh prayer. The audience was directed to the stage as the singer’s voice echoed in a projected video.

“In fact, this journey itself is the destination and all the characters you meet on the journey are played with the same energy. Every event that happens in your life is for your preparation,” Dosanjh spoke in Punjabi.

When the screen shut off, Bhangra dancers emerged marching in black across the stage.

Dosanjh rose in slo-mo from the bottom onto a platform and pushed his hand upwards to the intro of “Born to Shine,” featured on his most popular album G.O.A.T.

Dosanjh has been on the grind since 2008 in the entertainment industry. National stardom entered Dosanjh’s life after acting in “Udta Punjab,” a Bollywood movie about the drug problem among India’s youth.

Since then, he’s released 140 songs and now has over 18 million monthly listeners on Spotify from all over the world.

It’s not a surprise the concert’s production level was staged like a movie that Dosanjh himself was directing – full of costume changes and non-stop high energy.

Dosanjh showcased much of his recent album Ghost, which in itself is an album about understanding the purpose of human existence and speaking to the “Creator.”

He also played fan favourites from his other albums, including  “Lover,” “Naina,” “Hass Hass,” “Do You Know,” “Lemonade,” and “Khutti.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also came to witness history in the making and clapped along with Dosanjh’s bhangra team.

His voice projected so intensely that it seemed like he was singing out to the entire city of Toronto.

“Punjab is here!,” thousands in the audience chanted after each song.

There was smoke, fire, confetti, and even balloons. The audience literally volleyed the oversized red and white balloons from section to section.

The stadium lit up with everyones’ bright bracelets changing neon colours to the beats of the songs while lime green lights in the shape of DNA helices danced across the back of the venue.

Dosanjh’s humility showed on stage when he held the hands up of two little kids in Indian police uniforms that he brought up on stage.

“So many international students from Punjab come here. These kids are the future,” Dosanjh yelled out in pride with his hands clasped together in prayer.

I could see how special it was to see young kids on stage, especially as I looked next to my 14-year-old cousin whose eyes were wide in admiration.

Dosanjh also addressed the audience in between songs and thanked them for being there at the completely sold out show.

To end the performance, the superstar kneeled on the stage and bowed his head, a customary act of gratitude upon entering the gurdwara, a Sikh spiritual place of worship. The audience then meditated with Dosanjh on his latest single  “Main hoon Punjab,” meaning I am Punjab, which is the main track for the movie Amar Singh Chamkila.

21 Savage’s Toronto concert was one for the books after he performed to a packed crowd at Budweiser Stage for his “The American Dream Tour” over the weekend.

Born Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, but known professionally as 21 Savage, he turned Budweiser Stage upside down Saturday night with banger after banger in support of his new third solo studio album, american dream

The concert opened with American rappers J.I.D, Nardo Wick, and 21 Lil Harold who hyped up a filled and excited crowd. The performances truly set the bar for an incredible night of rap.

The Grammy award-winning British-born rapper began his set with some nostalgic visuals of his childhood before opening the show with his first hit of the night, “No Heart.” Known for his flashy streetwear style, the rapper donned a red and white tracksuit with an Atlanta Braves snapback and crisp white Air Forces to match.

For some lucky fans, this would mark the second time seeing 21 Savage after he made a surprise appearance during Drake’s “It’s All a Blur” tour at Scotiabank Arena in Oct. 2023. It was a historic performance as the rapper officially became a permanent U.S. resident and was legally allowed to perform internationally for the very first time.

Mark my words, the 31-year-old rapper made an even bigger splash during his show, truly reigning in his newfound clearance by giving fans a concert to remember.

Fans were blessed with some of his most popular songs from his new album, american dream, to his most highly-favoured features such as “TOPIA TWINS,” “10 Freaky Girls,” and “Knife Talk,” among others.

The event saw fans of all ages from teenagers to older adults jamming out to the Atlanta-raised artist like never before. In my section, there were teenagers who danced non-stop and sang the words to every song.

There is no doubt that 21 Savage concerts bring out a unique sense of community. With every song, groups formed and mosh pits were created, where both teens and grown men would jump around and party hysterically.

Fans would swarm and be united by his top hits like “Bank Account,” “Glock In My Lap,” “ball w/o you,” “a lot,” “Rich Flex” and so many more. The rapper’s setlist was perfectly catered to generate a show full of certified bops.

To accompany an otherwise lit show, there were also amazing visuals such as images of his childhood home, vibrant laser-like lights, an Atlanta backdrop, and of course, the classic smoke effects.

To close out the show, the rapper sang “redrum” which only made the fans hungry for more. 21 Savage will be hitting the stage once again at Budweiser tonight at 7 p.m.

Chappell Roan is on a clear trajectory to be a queer icon.

After a recent tour for her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, Roan recently hit the stage at Scotiabank Arena to open for pop princess Olivia Rodrigo during the Toronto stops of her GUTS world tour.

Donning a purple cowboy hat fringed with beads, an equally sparkly leotard, and a pair of silver cowboy boots, Roan looked every bit the pop darling as she strutted the stage singing some of her most popular songs during the Mar. 29 show.

READ MORE: ‘This isn’t like a straight line, no pun intended,’ Chappell Roan’s rise from the Bible Belt to budding queer icon

The Midwest singer has a way of connecting with audiences who are going through various uncomfortable milestones and rites of passage with her energetic songs and meaningful lyrics. This includes, but definitely is not limited to, queer audiences, who finally see our own lived experiences discussed and reflected in the lyrics of catchy pop songs.

Have you ever felt at odds with your family? Maybe you often feel like your loved ones do not understand your path. Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” may be the song for you.

Are you currently experiencing your first crush? Or falling in love for the first time? Roan’s song “Red Wine Supernova” transports you back to the butterflies in your stomach and the blush spreading across your cheeks that is synonymous with these experiences.

Taking to centre stage during her set, the opener led the growing crowd through the dance routine for her hit song “HOT TO GO!” before beginning a track that had the audience laughing and singing along as they formed letters with their arms and body rolled along with the singer.

And while these songs will have you up and dancing, she also has a knack for pulling at heartstrings with slower, more melodic songs.

Such as her song “Casual,” which speaks to the experience of being in love with someone who is not honest with you, themselves, or their friends, and had people in the audience – this writer included – shedding a tear or two as we swayed to the song with our flashlights in the air.

After seeing her perform at the Toronto Opera House as part of her The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess tour this past October, it’s all the more impressive to see her command a stage as large as that of Scotiabank Arena, with thousands of people dancing and singing along.

Roan is the perfect opener for an artist like Olivia Rodrigo, a former Disney star whose popular songs speak to the very real and relatable experiences of falling in love, getting your heart broken, and growing up. The girl power kept going when Rodrigo took to centre stage, kicking off her set with her hit “bad idea right,” as her fans screamed with excitement.

Rodrigo’s performance left fans screaming their hearts out to songs like “drivers license,” and “traitor,” reminiscing on their first heartbreaks in an atmosphere that almost felt like a massive slumber party, with laughter, tears, dancing, and reflecting.

In my opinion, there is nothing better than a night of singing and dancing to songs steeped in girl power and good vibes, and Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan graced Toronto with just that.

Toronto has been witnessing an influx of trending artists performing in the city lately and Mariah The Scientist was no exception last night at Danforth Music Hall.

The all-ages event was filled with the shining eyes of young girls belting out Mariah’s songs while being decked out in fur coats, black shades, and matching bodysuits.

It was clear everyone was desperate to see the headliner, but they equally vibed to the show’s openers Chxrry22 and Nineteen85.

Chxrry22 brought a mix of girl next door and sultry sounds to the stage, while Nineteen85 had everyone singing to old school favourites when “Unthinkable” and “Marvin’s Room” blared on the speakers.

Although Mariah came on with only one hour left until closing, I could see why so many people thought she was worth the wait.

“She’s a regular person I listen to. I love R&B and I just really like her music,” one fan told Now Toronto.

Some audience members told me Mariah was coming to town because of Concerts Fanatics, a growing social media account on Instagram and Twitter that promotes upcoming concerts happening in Toronto.

As Mariah graced the stage with background visuals of BeetleJuice and Tom Cruise’s face from popular action rom-com “Knight and Day” behind her, voices echoing “She’s so cute” and “I love her” scattered throughout the audience.

The singer struggled in the beginning, scrunching her face at her own pitchiness while apologizing that her voice has been “off” for the last two weeks due to an illness.

Despite the rocky start, mainly girls and their boyfriends screamed in adoration and support, making the artist blush on stage. “Don’t make me nervous,” Mariah said with a shy smile.

The screams didn’t stop there. Fans continued to scream when she asked the audience how they were doing by pointing her magenta blinged mic to each fan section.

I applaud the artist for pushing herself because she was able to shine through when she surrendered to the present moment of the emotional power in her own lyrics.

Eventually, Mariah cozied up on stage as she sheepishly slid off her heels, took fans’ phones to snap pictures of herself, and graciously accepted gifts from an eager front row of hands in the air.

As people raised their middle fingers in the air when Mariah started singing “Revenge,” which samples Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River,” I looked at my colleague and said, “Do you notice there’s a melancholy mood all around us?”

Mariah’s tunes touch on common pains young adults face growing up – heartbreak, relationship problems, feeling lost and too emotional.

I can definitely say Mariah has an ability to put into words what young people are afraid to admit to themselves, and that gives her fans the strength they need to feel their own emotions.

When I felt her chilled-down R&B beats in my skin, even as I stood near the back of the crowd, I felt like she was speaking to me too.

Mariah The Scientist is performing in Montreal tonight at Théâtre Beanfield.

If you want to lose your voice, feel like your youngest self and experience girl power at its utmost peak, go to an Olivia Rodrigo concert.

The 21-year-old Grammy Award-winning singer and actress blew the roof off of Scotiabank Arena on Friday and Saturday for her “GUTS” world tour, which includes shows in North America and Europe. The tour is in support of her second studio album, GUTS.

Following her massively successful debut album, SOUR, the singer faced mounting pressures and high expectations to match or surpass the existing calibre for her sophomore album. But the singer did just that.

Not only did she make another hit album, she once again encapsulated the unavoidable feelings of teenage angst, coming-of-age and the crippling battle between missing your ex and wanting better for yourself. The former Disney actress has come a long way from her roles as Paige Olvera in Bizaardvark and Nini Salazar-Roberts in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

GUTS is an ode to those who experienced betrayal, heartache and mistreatment in a relationship where one is deeply in love and thus, blindsided by blatant red flags.

Rodrigo’s concert was basically therapy for her fans, as they were able to sing out their feelings whilst being comforted by thousands of other people sharing the same deep-cut emotions. The concert began with opener, Chappell Roan, who sang her famous hits “Red Wine Supernova” and “HOT TO GO!,” among others.

Then, at exactly 8:30 p.m. (we love an artist who’s on time) the pop queen came out, kicking off the show with “bad idea right?”. Throughout the entire concert, fans can be seen screaming the lyrics of every hit song from “vampire,” “traitor,” “drivers license,” “deja vu,” to “brutal,” and more.

Courtesy: Esteban Lombana

Even those who aren’t the biggest fans of Rodrigo wouldn’t be able to deny the infectious energy that emulated in the nearly two-hour concert. Only a handful of artists can take over a room in such an awe-inspiring way and Ms. Rodrigo possesses that power greatly.

The most impressive feat of all is that the singer did not have an overtly grand production set-up. Rodrigo simply had a seven-piece band, a group of female backup dancers, two platforms and at one point, a rising crescent moon. Additionally, she had a giant screen in the back that would showcase close-ups and nostalgic videos of the superstar.

Rodrigo proved she didn’t need a lavish stage production to give a worthy performance, her stunning vocals, soulful riffs and iconic dance moves were enough to put the audience in tears.

Each performance had character and represented the song’s storyline. For instance, for “teenage dream,” the singer played the piano while photos and videos of her childhood were projected on the screen behind her. The song itself is a message to Rodrigo’s 19-year-old self and the harsh realities of growing up.

For “pretty isn’t pretty,” Rodrigo’s diverse ensemble of dancers came together to synchronize with the singer, all while displaying the different versions of pretty, fitting for a song about dealing with the societal expectations of beauty.

Meanwhile, for “making the bed,” the singer was, of course, lying on a platform in the middle of the stage for dramatic effect. And during the performance of “logical” and “enough for you,” the star was sitting on a floating moon crescent as it hovered from one end of the arena to the other, providing a clear view to all fans from the front row to those sitting in the nosebleeds.

With each performance came numerous costume changes as well and knowing Rodrigo’s bold, grunge/pop punk fashion sense, she came out with fabulous outfits such as a silver-sequined set and a black bra with matching black short shorts with a bedazzled cover-up on top.

All the outfits were cleverly paired with a set of Doc Martens and fishnet stockings, reinforcing her as the princess of pop. Her fans also came prepared and ready for a Rodrigo show, as swarms of purple (her favourite colour), butterfly clips, sparkly short skirts, leather, cowboy hats, fishnets and baby tees were amongst the crowd.

Courtesy: Esteban Lombana

Nearing the end of the concert, Rodrigo sang some of her most popular hits such as “brutal”, “all-american b*tch,” “good 4 u,” and “get him back.”

During “all-american b*tch”, the singer paused to tell fans, “I want you to think about something that really f**king pisses you off and when the lights go off, just scream at the top of your lungs.”

What followed was a sea of ground-breaking, high-pitched screams that only a die-hard Rodrigo fan could let out. If I learned one thing from this concert, it’s to never break an Olivia Rodrigo fan’s heart.

As Rodrigo sang “get him back,” for her final song, she made her way out the arena and showed her appreciation for fans along the way by accepting as many gifts as the five-foot-four star could hold. She gave high fives, hugs, and accepted cards, sunglasses, charm bracelets, and even a red “all-canadian b*tch” cowgirl hat which the singer absolutely adored.

From performing in Massey Hall back in 2022, to selling out two back-to-back shows at Scotiabank Arena, the trajectory of Rodrigo’s fame is truly amazing to witness and based on the blood-curdling screams of her fans, the singer is only going to grow bigger from here.

When the rest of Toronto was snowed in, eastside concert venue HISTORY was bustling with Mahalia fans last weekend.

The U.K. singer began her Mahalia in Real Life: North America Tour in February, touching down in Toronto as one of her last stops.

Mahalia and her opener Alicia Creti brought the same energy as if it was their opening night,  bringing both tears of joy and healing amongst the crowd.

Torontonians were shimmying and nodding their heads when Mahalia performed hit songs “Simmer” featuring Burna Boy, “In My Bag”, and “What You Did” featuring Ella Mai.

Cret shared original piano tunes and a ranging vibrato, enchanting everyone in the crowd.

Twenty-five-year-old Mahalia plucked Creti from Montreal after moving to L.A. Creti spoke on stage about how hard it was for her to leave her family, especially her brother who has autism.

Mahalia swooped in for an hour-long set mixed with humble showmanship, classic R&B jams, and popular songs highlighted in Mahalia’s Complete Playlist on Spotify.

In between songs, Mahalia spoke directly to the crowd and invited her live guitarists and drum mates to join alongside her. “Acting is reacting,” she shared after saying her guitarist always gives great advice.

The singer songwriter has over two million monthly listeners on Spotify at the moment.

How did she gain fame?

During her set, Mahalia addressed that she’s now an “unproblematic girl” but wrote songs about her ex back when she was a “problematic girl.”

Shortly after, Mahalia pushed her microphone out to the audience, teaching them a little sing-along. Everyone roared out as she performed a call back and forth.

Both in her songs and on social media, Mahalia has been known to undeniably show up as her full self. She frequently promotes body neutrality and posts unedited photos.

Doja Cat gave Toronto something to talk about last night after leaving a mark on the city following a power-packed performance courtesy of “The Scarlet Tour.”

The 28-year-old Grammy award-winning singer and rapper, whose real name is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, is currently on her second tour and her first-ever debut arena tour in support of her fourth studio album, Scarlet

The city was in for a great time as Doja Cat hit concertgoers with hit after hit, pun very much intended.

And she didn’t come empty handed. In fact, Ice Spice opened up for her and got the crowd on its feet.

And she didn’t disappoint either, with big tracks including “Munch,” “Boy’s a liar,” and “In Ha Mood.”

Doja Cat’s crowd favourite songs of the night included “Tia Tamera,” “Agora Hills,” “Attention,” “Woman,” and “Say So.”

The L.A native, who began releasing music on SoundCloud as a teenager, is rightfully one of the most sought-after artists of our generation after rising to fame seemingly overnight with the release of her song “Mooo!” which became a viral meme and put the artist on the map, for better or worse.

Since then, she has been working tirelessly for the past five years to cement her place amongst heavy hitters who are easily by now considered her peers and equals in the music industry.

And in a full circle moment, her most popular latest body of work, “Paint The Town Red,” is among 2023’s top influential songs, according to TikTok trends.

She’s a well-rounded artist who many consider a triple threat thanks to her melodic singing, powerful rapping and incredible dancing abilities, like her full on choreography during her show (at times reminiscent of Janet Jackson), which she wasn’t shy to show off to a city that knows how to get down.

Overall, the show had a lot of layers to it, from massive spider and eyeball props to using real fire and fireworks, there was something to see from start to finish.
